Jewel ACL – Neoligament

It is a tissue graft-sparing device for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction, proving to be a boon for patients requiring revision ACL reconstruction who wish to avoid using their tendons as grafts during surgery. It is also an ideal choice for multiligamentous injuries of the knee joint, where the insufficiency of autologous ligaments makes it the right option for multiple reconstructions.

Allograft has been the primary solution in these situations, but its lower strength and higher rate of retear compared to autografts are limiting factors. The device has been specifically designed for use in partial or total tissue-sparing ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendons.

In a partial tissue graft-sparing reconstruction procedure, only one tendon, either the semitendinosus or gracilis, is placed into the Jewel ACL. Subsequently, both tendons are mounted together on a femoral loop button.

Structure

The Jewel ACL is manufactured from Polyethylene Terephthalate (polyester). This tubular scaffold has a strength matched to that of the semitendinosus tendon, and when doubled, its strength is similar to that of the natural ACL. The open weave sections with appropriate spacing encourage tissue ingrowth into the scaffold. Its hydrophilic properties enhance cell adhesion and expedite the process of tissue induction mechanical properties.

Speedy recovery and early return to sports are expected due to its excellent tensile and load-bearing properties, which are matched with the natural ACL. There is no need to wait until the end of the typical tissue remodeling phases of autografts and allografts.
