Calcium Supplementation

It is very common to ask for calcium tablets for bone and muscle pain. A lot of myths are attached with calcium supplementation. First know who need calcium supplementation?

  1. If you have osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is simply decreased strength of bones due to loss of bone marrow density (mineral and protein content). Our bones are made up of minerals (65%) and organic matrix (35%, mainly collagen protein). With aging our bones tend to become weak and we may need some medicines including calcium to prevent fractures.

How would we know that our bones are weak and we need calcium? DEXA is commonly done investigation to know about bone marrow density. Now the next question is that who should undergo a DEXA scan?

Not all elderly men and all postmenopausal women need DEXA. You need a DEXA scan if:

  • You are a postmenopausal woman and have a family history of hip fractures

  • You sustained a fracture after a minor fall (both men and women)

  • You have had your ovaries removed at an early age

  • You had an early menopause (before 45 years)

  • You (men or women) are a known case of rheumatoid arthritis which is associated with low bone marrow density

  • You are on drugs which reduce bone marrow density, like steroids
