Fractures in Children
Bones of children are different from an adult bone. Injury and healing pattern are different in children bones from adult bones. Children bones are growing bones and they have open growth plates at their ends. Injury to these growth plates may result in growth arrest, deformity and shortening of limbs
Bones in children have thicker covering (periosteum) than adult bone so much greater energy is required to disrupt than in adults. So often children bones fracture incompletely (they break partially or bend only instead of fracture). Also, bones in children have rich blood supply so they unite rapidly compared to adult bones.
Common Fractures In Children:
A prtially broken forearm bone in a child (green stick frcature)
Incomplete fracture of leg bone in a child
Treatment of Pediatric Fractures:
Treatment of pediatric fractures: Most of the times only reduction and plaster cast is all that is required. There are a few fractures (notably around elbow) in children which require surgery. Early treatment of fractures is must in children as bones unite rapidly and they may unite in wrong position if not properly treated. This may lead to limb deformities.
Elbow fracture and its fixation with K wires
A malunited elbow fracture resulting in arm deformity.

remember that Dr. Jain came out from his clinic to see my mother because my mother was not able walk a single step. He did total knee replacement on both side and now my mother is walking without aid.
