Torticollis

This refers to neck tilted to one side. This deformity usually present at birth or shortly thereafter. Head is tilted to one side and chin is rotated toward opposite side. This happens due to a lesion in the neck muscle and a palpable mass may be felt in the involved neck muscle within the first 4 weeks of life. Later a palpable cord may be felt in the involved muscle. If not treated in time these children may develop asymmetrical development of face later in life, due to flattening of one side of face. This occurs because child always sleeps on the affected side of the face.

Treatment

In the first year children can be treated with regular stretching. Severe deformity may require surgery which is best done at 4–6 years of age.
