Dr. Jitesh Jain, Best Meniscus Surgeon in Jaipur
Arthroscopic (keyhole) meniscus repair and meniscus tear surgery in Jaipur by Dr. Jitesh Jain, fellowship-trained knee and sports injury surgeon. Day-care surgery, early walking, and a meniscus-preserving approach wherever possible.
Meniscus tears often come with an ACL injury. See ACL reconstruction in Jaipur.
What is the Meniscus?
The menisci are wedge-shaped, cushion-like discs (made primarily of type I collagen) sandwiched between the thigh bone (femur) and the leg bone (tibia). There are two menisci in each knee, the outer (lateral) and the inner (medial). Each has three parts: a posterior horn, a body, and an anterior horn. They draw their nutrition mainly from the joint fluid (synovial fluid). The inner meniscus is larger and more elliptical, while the outer is more circular.
Why the Meniscus Matters
The menisci cushion the knee and protect the joint cartilage on the ends of the thigh and leg bones.
They help keep the thigh bone seated on the leg bone, maintaining congruity of the joint.
They maximise the contact area between tibia and femur, spreading body weight evenly.
Preserving the meniscus protects the cartilage and lowers the long-term risk of knee arthritis.
Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear
Knee pain with recurrent swelling is the most common feature of a meniscus tear.
A torn fragment caught in the joint can cause a clicking sound and pain on bending, as in climbing stairs.
A torn piece trapped between the bones can stop the leg from straightening fully (a "locked" knee).
Discomfort when pivoting, squatting, or twisting the knee under load.
What Causes a Meniscus Tear?
In young patients, meniscus tears are mostly caused by a twisting injury to the knee, often during sports or an accident. In older people, tears are usually due to age-related degenerative changes. An abnormally shaped meniscus (discoid meniscus) or a meniscal cyst can also make the meniscus more prone to tearing. Because the inner (medial) meniscus is less mobile than the outer, inner meniscus tears are more common.
Can Every Meniscus Tear Be Repaired?
Not all tears can be stitched, and it comes down to blood supply. Only the outer 10 to 25% of the meniscus (the "red-red" zone) has a blood supply and the best healing potential. The inner one-third (the "white-white" zone) has no blood vessels at all, and in between lies the "red-white" zone. Dr. Jitesh always tries to preserve the meniscus where it can heal:
Good blood supply. Fresh, small, peripheral tears here can usually be repaired (stitched) and saved.
Partial blood supply. Some of these tears can be repaired, depending on the pattern and freshness.
No blood supply. These, along with old, degenerative and complex tears, are usually trimmed (resected).
Meniscus Tear Surgery in Jaipur
A meniscus tear is diagnosed by clinical examination and confirmed on MRI. All meniscus surgery is done arthroscopically (keyhole, minimally invasive), through tiny incisions with a camera, so recovery is quick.
- Meniscus repair: fresh tears, small tears and peripheral red-red zone tears are sutured back together to preserve the meniscus.
- Meniscus trimming (partial meniscectomy): old tears, white-white zone tears, degenerative and complex tears are neatly trimmed away.
- Day-care, keyhole surgery: tiny incisions, less pain, and an early return to walking and routine activity.
- Guided rehabilitation: a structured physiotherapy plan to restore movement and strength. See exercises after meniscus repair.

FAQs: Meniscus Tear Treatment in Jaipur
What is a meniscus tear?
A tear in one of the two wedge-shaped cartilage cushions (menisci) that sit between the thigh bone and leg bone in the knee. The menisci act as shock absorbers and stabilisers for the knee.
What are the symptoms of a meniscus tear?
Knee pain with recurrent swelling, a clicking or catching sensation, pain on bending or twisting, and sometimes "locking" where the knee cannot straighten fully.
Can a meniscus tear heal without surgery?
Some small tears in the outer, blood-rich (red-red) zone, and degenerative tears in older low-demand patients, may settle with physiotherapy. Tears that cause locking, persistent pain or instability usually need arthroscopic treatment.
Is the meniscus repaired or removed?
Dr. Jitesh preserves the meniscus wherever possible. Fresh, small and peripheral (red-red zone) tears are repaired (stitched). Old, complex or white-white zone tears that cannot heal are neatly trimmed.
How is meniscus surgery done?
It is done arthroscopically, keyhole surgery through tiny incisions using a camera. It is usually day-care, with less pain and an early return to walking.
What is the recovery time after meniscus surgery?
After a trimming, many patients walk the same or next day and return to routine in a few weeks. A repair needs more protection and a longer, guided rehabilitation to let the stitched meniscus heal.
Is meniscus surgery covered by insurance?
Yes, meniscus surgery is available cashless on all major insurance providers at Rajasthan Hospital, with help on the paperwork and pre-authorization.
