What is Shoulder Replacement?
Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. The top of the arm bone (humerus) is the ball, and it fits into a socket on the shoulder blade. In a healthy shoulder, the rotator cuff muscles hold the ball in the socket and give the power to lift the arm.
When arthritis, a massive rotator cuff tear or a bad fracture destroys this joint, the damaged bone and cartilage are removed and replaced with titanium and medical-grade plastic implants. The main goal is pain relief, along with getting back the use of your arm.
A traditional (total) shoulder replacement can work, because it relies on healthy rotator cuff muscles
A reverse shoulder replacement lets the deltoid muscle lift the arm instead
X-rays and, if needed, an MRI decide which replacement is right for you
Gentle passive movement in the first weeks after surgery
Who Needs a Shoulder Replacement?
Dr. Jitesh typically recommends it for one or more of these problems:
Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy
A severe form of shoulder arthritis that develops with a massive, long-standing rotator cuff tear that cannot be repaired.
Complex Shoulder Fractures
Severe breaks in the shoulder joint, especially in older adults, where the bone is too shattered to piece back together safely.
Failed Earlier Replacement
A traditional shoulder replacement that has worn out, loosened, or failed over time.
Chronic Shoulder Dislocation
Shoulders that repeatedly pop out due to severe instability and tissue damage. Younger patients usually need keyhole dislocation repair instead.
Severe Shoulder Pain
Unrelenting pain that disrupts sleep and has not responded to physiotherapy, steroid injections or medication. See also shoulder pain at night.
Stiff, Weak Arm
Everyday tasks like reaching a high shelf or combing your hair have become impossible because of pain and loss of movement.
Types of Shoulder Replacement
Total Shoulder Replacement
The damaged ball and socket are replaced with implants in their natural positions. Works well when the rotator cuff muscles are healthy.
Rotator Cuff IntactReverse Shoulder Replacement
The ball and socket are switched. The deltoid muscle takes over lifting the arm, bypassing the torn rotator cuff and ending bone-on-bone pain.
For Massive Cuff Tears & FracturesRevision Shoulder Replacement
For an earlier replacement that has loosened or failed. A reverse design is often used when the rotator cuff is no longer working.
Failed Earlier SurgeryReverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery
Because reverse shoulder replacement changes the natural anatomy, it is a technically demanding procedure. The implants must be positioned precisely so the deltoid muscle has exactly the right tension to lift the arm.
- General anaesthesia with a nerve block for pain relief in the first 24 hours
- Surgery takes about 1.5 to 2 hours
- Metal ball fixed on the shoulder blade, plastic socket on the arm bone
- 1 to 2 days hospital stay for most patients
- Gentle pendulum exercises start right after surgery

Stick-assisted exercises help the deltoid learn to lift the arm
Recovery After Shoulder Replacement
Sling & Pendulum
Arm in a sling to protect the new joint. Gentle passive pendulum exercises begin.
Healing Phase
Sling most of the day and night. Nothing heavier than a cup of tea.
Active Therapy
Sling usually stopped. Physiotherapy teaches the deltoid to lift the arm.
Back to Life
Excellent pain relief for most patients. Light activities like swimming or gardening.
Maximum Improvement
Strength and stamina keep improving for up to a full year.

FAQs: Shoulder Replacement in Jaipur
What is reverse shoulder replacement?
In a reverse shoulder replacement the ball and socket are switched: a metal ball is fixed on the shoulder blade and a plastic socket on the arm bone. The deltoid muscle then lifts the arm, so the joint no longer depends on a torn rotator cuff.
Who needs a shoulder replacement?
Patients with severe shoulder arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy (arthritis with a massive tear that cannot be repaired), complex shoulder fractures in older adults, a failed earlier shoulder replacement, or severe pain that has not improved with physiotherapy, injections and medicines.
What is the difference between total and reverse shoulder replacement?
A traditional (total) shoulder replacement relies on healthy rotator cuff muscles to work. When the rotator cuff is badly torn, Dr. Jitesh recommends a reverse shoulder replacement, where the deltoid muscle takes over the job of lifting the arm.
How long does the surgery take and how long is the hospital stay?
The surgery takes about 1.5 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia, usually with a nerve block for pain relief. Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days.
How long is recovery after shoulder replacement?
The arm stays in a sling for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Active physiotherapy starts at 6 to 8 weeks, most patients return to light activities between 3 and 6 months, and the shoulder keeps improving for up to a year.
What is the cost of shoulder replacement in Jaipur?
The cost depends on the type of implant, the hospital room and the length of stay. WhatsApp your X-ray or MRI and our team will share a personalised estimate.
Is insurance accepted for shoulder replacement?
Yes, shoulder replacement is available cashless with all major insurance providers, CGHS, ECHS, Railway, Ayushman Bharat, Chiranjeevi Yojana and RGHS at Rajasthan Hospital. Our team helps with the paperwork.
